Thursday, February 11th- Jazz After Work at Vic's On the Minneaplis Riverfront
Jazz88 is pleased to host Jazz After Work,  where the Twin Cities Business and Arts Community meet to refresh, connect and enjoy live jazz once a month on the 2nd Thursday.     Join us for our next social gathering Thursday, February 11th, 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Vic's on the Minneapolis Riverfront (next to Saint Anthony Main)  in Minneapolis.  Vic's has free validated parking  so visit www.vicsdining.com for details. Globafo will perform.  This is a free event.

About Globafo
The veteran musicians that make up the new group Globafo come with a wide range of music performance and compositional backgrounds. The group makes original music that builds on folk textures from Latin music, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and American and European folk.

Guitarist/Leader John Penny
Jazz greats that John has performed and/or recorded with include Organ legend Captain Jack MacDuff, drummers Eric Kamau Gravatt and Bernard Purdie, harmonicists Howard Levy and Mike Turk, and keyboardist Bobby Lyle.

Drummer Rey Rivera

Diverse experience includes work with such luminaries as Pee Wee Elias of James Brown, Chet Catallo of Sypra Gyra, Jeff Jarvis, Patato, Franke Malabe, Eddie (gua-gua) Rivera, Ramito, Los Condes, Bob Weiner, Bobby Mantello and Miguelito Valdes. Rey received a Music Certificate from the University of Mantanza de Cuba for Folkloric Percussion under the study of Alphonso Dejesus of the Muinequitos de Matanza.

Bassist Charlie Riddle-Charlie has been playing professionally around the Twin Cities area for about thirty years.He has played with such bands as Inside Straight, Will Sumner's Tropic Zone, Salsa Blanca, The Sevilles, Zafra, to name a few.  During that time he opened for artists such as, Sam and Dave, Jr. Walker, Sun Ra, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, Gato Barbieri, Peter Tosh, The Temptations and many others.

 

Saturday, February 13th- John Pizzarelli with the Minnesota Orchestra
The Minnesota Orchestra is presenting a Valentine’s Celebration featuring jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli performing love songs from the Great American Songbook with the Minnesota Orchestra...   Saturday evening, February 13th at Orchestra Hall.  Ticket  information is available at www.minnesotaorchestra.org  or by calling 612.371.5656

Sunday, February 14th- Jazz88 Valentine's Day Special Screening of REBECCA at The Heights Theater

Grab your sweetie and join us Valentine's Day (Sunday, February 14th) for our 4th Annual Valentine's Film Night at The Heights Theater!
We're screening a newly restored 35mm print of of REBECCA (1940), Starring Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, Judith Anderson and Nigel Bruce.Directed by ALFRED HITCHCOCK.

Don't miss your chance to see Alfred Hitchcock's first American Masterpiece, REBECCA, on the big screen. Based upon the celebrated Daphne Du Maurier novel and sumptuously produced by David O. Selznick, REBECCA is a film filled with Romance And Suspense! When a naive young woman marries a rich widower and settles in his gigantic mansion, she finds the memory of the first wife maintaining a grip on her husband and the servants.

Friday, February 19th- Carnaval Brasileiro at the Fine Line Music Cafe
Jazz88 is a proud community sponsor of  Carnaval Brasileiro - Brazilian Carnival - 2010, happening Friday evening,  February 19th at the Fine Line Music Cafe in downtown Minneapolis. Carnaval Brasileiro celebrates Brazilian culture with elaborate costumes, dancing, and music performed by the Brazilian carnival band, Beira Mar Brasil, led by Robert Everest.  Special guest singer and dancer from Salvador, Bahia, Dandara, is flying into Minneapolis to perfrom for the 4th straight year.  Also returning are professional sambistas Edilson Lima and Vanessa Luiz. Sunday, February 21st- Dreaming the Duke at the Ordway

Ordway Center presents Dreaming the Duke, Sunday evening February 21st at the Ordway. Jazz vocalist Nneena Freelon, Opera superstar Harolyn Blackwell and pianist Mike Garson blend their genres to celebrate the legacy and influences of Duke Ellington. Information at www.Ordway.org.

Wednesday, February 24th- Jazz88 RestauranTour at the 128 Cafe
Join us Wednesday, February 24th for a Jazz88 evening at one of the most romantic and intimate independent dining spots in the Twin Cities...128 Cafe in Saint Paul.
Jill Wilson and the 128 staff will host a 4 course evening with wine pairings.
The Jazz88 seating is at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $40 and we're limited to 26 attendees.

The upcoming Oscars have me thinking about Jill Wilson. Pretend, just for a moment, that the Academy Awards include a category for Best Performance by a St. Paul Restaurateur. I'm fairly certain that Wilson would at least make the short list of nominees, if not hear Scarlett Johansson or Seth Rogen announce her name from the stage of the Kodak Theatre, following the words, "And the award goes to. ... Thursday, March 4th- Jazz88's REEL JAZZ Film Series Presents AN EVENING WITH BOB DEFLORES- Jazz In Paris!
Thursday, March 4th, JAZZ88's REEL JAZZ Film Series will continue a great Winter lineup of independent jazz films screening at the Bryant Lake Bowl Cabaret Theater, 810 West Lake St. in Minneapolis.

Join us Thursday, March 4th  for An Evening With Bob Deflores- Jazz In Paris!
6:00 p.m. Doors Open    6:45 p.m. Michale Dregni Readings  7:00 p.m. Film

The screening is limited to 80 attendees and the suggested donation is $10.

Local film historian-preservationist Bob DeFlores, who has been collecting and restoring films since 1953, will host a very special evening of REEL JAZZ Films from his personal collection celebrating Jazz In Paris, featuring rare clips from Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, Sydney Bechet, Josephine Baker and many more.
Michael Dregni will introduce the evening with a reading from his books on Parisian jazz. He is a Twin Cities guitarist and author of too many books on Django Reinhardt, including Django: The Life & Times of a Gypsy Legend, Gypsy Jazz: In Search of Django Reinhardt & the Soul of Gypsy Swing, and Django Reinhardt & the Illustrated History of Gypsy Jazz.

About Bob DeFlores
Bob DeFlores grew up in Hollywood immersed in showbiz culture. His parents performed in movies, on the radio, and in nightclubs, and his passion for the cinema and jazz music developed early. His library of 6,000 works includes rare newsreels, cartoon shorts, sports footage, full-length features, and jazz and big band material.
DeFlores has assisted many legendary performers complete their film libraries, including Bing Crosby, Ginger Rogers, Shirley Temple, Kitty Carlise, Eleanor Powell, Tex Benke, Buddy Rogers, Frankie Carle, Phil Harris, and Loretta Young. In addition, he has become a primary resource for historical footage and clips used on A&E's Biography series, as well as such galas as the Kennedy Center Honors and the Grammy Awards. Based in the Twin Cities, DeFlores frequently travels across the country to present work from his expansive archive at universities and various organizations.
